That's my advice. They have learned that mastery comes through repetition. They know the value of failure. Nobody perfects a trick on the first try, no matter how many times they've seen it done. You improve with every attempt and adjust something after every unsuccessful try. And once you've learned it, you repeat to reinforce and retain it.
Skateboarders are dedicated. They'll stay out there all day and into the evening past dark, and after that if the lights come on.
They're good at giving feedback and they accept criticism from others with more experience or better skills. Importantly they also know how to celebrate each other's achievements. with high fives, cheers and nods of respect.
I've also seen them generously helping the younger kids who are new to the park, giving them a few pointers and words of encouragement. A kid I know, slips on his helmet when the really little kids show up so they don't feel its uncool.
They know, although maybe intuitively, that they don't lose anything by helping someone else. It's ultimately not a competition with anyone but themselves.
Skaters are perceived sometimes as slackers or rebels. And sure, maybe they ditch a bit more school than the average kid. I see the other side of it. They are developing skills that make them patient learners and good leaders. Yeah, I'd hire a skate kid.
