"If you deeply observe, everything is your teacher."
Qasim Chauham
I choose to document my observations because in the process of doing so, I have the time to consider how they have affected me, and afterwards I have something persistent to revisit when I am looking for inspiration or merely wishing to remember.
The paradox of hosting them on a public platform is not lost on me. A website can accommodate a variety of media and offers some reassurance that the content remains available to me. A journal or a sketchbook may serve a similar function for their author, but aren't typically made accessible to anyone else.
I'm grateful to have the opportunity to travel and for these experiences and I admit at times it may border on appearing boastful. It's only fair to also acknowledge that what I include is more actively filtered or at least edited to a greater degree because of that.
When I was young I was fascinated with museums. There was an appeal to the collection and display of artifacts. I dreamt of being a curator, for a time a taxidermist, not a fireman or an astronaut.
My collections today are a reflection of observation and experiences. There are parts of my daily life that repeat and that I actively seek out. My habits. My routine. In a new city, one of my first stops is a local coffee spot. Walking an unfamiliar place, I look for interesting signs and manhole covers.
Life strings together our experiences. One thing leading to another. Often in repetition if we are not mindful. How we choose to spend our limited time is the great task of our lives
Others may not have the luxury of choice. I'm aware of the privilege I carry. The ability to go places and do things without much worry or concern. I pause to consider the miracle of air travel and how just a generation ago, it would have been impossible to wake up one morning at home and go to bed half way around the world the same day.
What to see
Within a very loosely organized collection of pages, there are observations considered and recorded in photos, essays, sketches and videos. I’ve also chosen to feature the tickets, cards and scraps that have been put away and seem to have accumulated in boxes and drawers over the years.
